Mathigon wants to provide the world’s best, personalised educational content for every student. This is only possible by collecting and storing a certain amount of personal information. Please read this page carefully, to understand how we process your data.
You can contact us at any time, if you have questions or concerns regarding your privacy, if you would like to see all the data we have about you, or if you would like us to delete that data. Please email email@example.com, or use our contact form.
By using Mathigon, you consent to the collection, storage, and processing of data as described below. Please note that we may collect some data whenever you use our website or mobile apps, even if you haven’t signed up for a Mathigon account, or if you didn’t log in.
When you create a Mathigon account, we ask you to provide a certain amount of personal information: your name, email address, date of birth, password, and country. If you log in with Facebook or Google, we receive some of this data from your social media profile. You can update your details on your Account Settings page.
Knowledge and Ability
As you use Mathigon, we track which exercises you solve correctly and incorrectly, and try to estimate how well you understand different topics in Mathematics. We also track the questions you ask, hints you receive from the virtual personal tutor, and similar interactions.
Like most websites, we collect some basic data about your browsing behaviour whenever you visit Mathigon.org, even if you haven’t created an account. This includes your IP address, approximate location, browser and device brand, duration on the site, which pages you visited, which links you clicked on, and what website you visited just before Mathigon (the “referrer”).
When we send you an email newsletter, we may track if you opened it, when and where you opened it, what links you clicked on, and whether you forwarded it.
Contact Form and Communication
Users contacting us via email or our online form provide any personal details at their own risk. Your information is kept private, stored securely, and deleted when no longer required (e.g. when the question or query has been resolved).
Using your data, we can personalise Mathigon whenever you visit: by remembering your progress, adapting the content, or suggesting what to learn next.
Improving our Content
We often look at user data to refine our content, features, and marketing – for yourself, as well as for all other users. This includes diagnosing technical or pedagogical problems, A/B testing new functionality, and improving the overall user experience.
Sharing with Teachers and Parents
If your Mathigon account is linked to a teacher or parent, we’ll share some of your progress data. This includes how often you visited Mathigon, how long you spent on the site, which exercises you answered, and how well you mastered different topics.
We may aggregate the data from many of our users, so that it is no longer personally identifiable. We may share this with third parties or the general public, for marketing, advertising, or other similar uses.
When creating an account, you can sign up for our email newsletter. We’ll contact you occasionally about new features and content, or to ask you to participate in surveys and research studies. You can unsubscribe at any time, using the link at the end of every email or on your Account Settings page.
As part of our service, we might share some of your data with third parties (“sub-processors”). This includes mLab (database storage), Google (hosting, analytics, and advertising), Stripe and Paypal (donations), and Sendgrid (emails sending). Please refer to their respective privacy policies for more details.
We may also share personally identifiable information with third parties in order to (1) satisfy any applicable law, regulation or governmental request, to (2) detect and prevent fraud, security, or technical issues, to (3) protect our rights, property, or safety, our users and the public, or (4) after we have received your explicit permission to do so.
We try to take all appropriate measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, loss, modification, or disclosure. However, like all websites, there is always some risk that reasons like hardware or software failure, human error, or malicious intent might compromise the security of your data.
Mathigon cannot be held liable for unauthorised or unintended access to users’ personal data. If we detect a data breach that affects personal data, we will disclose it within 72 hours.
At any time, you may request to receive a copy of all the personal data we have about you, to correct data that you believe is inaccurate, or to have your data deleted. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or via our contact form, and we will respond to your requests within 30 days. Please note that, where permitted under applicable law, we may charge a small administrative fee and/or ask for proof of identity
Unless you request so at an earlier time, we will delete your account and user data if you haven’t logged in to Mathigon for more than four years.
Additional cookies may be stored on your computer by third party websites, such as when logging in with social media accounts, or when clicking on referral links and advertising.
You can delete or disable cookies in your browser settings, or by visiting Mathigon in a private/incognito browser window.
Occasionally, Mathigon will link to external websites. While we do our best to curate high quality content, we can’t guarantee the quality, relevance and safety of these external sites. You should always be cautious when clicking on links, and you do so at your own risk. Mathigon cannot be held liable for damages caused by visiting any external links.
Mathigon also contains social sharing buttons, which let you publish content directly to various social media platforms. You are advised that you do so at your own discretion. Note that many social media sites will track your request, and use it to personalise their other content and advertising.
